Portrait of Robin,

my Mother

Digital Painting in Photoshop

2019

16 x 16 inches

I have a complicated relationship with my mother due to trauma, differences in personality and values, and codependency. While healing my anxious attachment style and reaching a more secure baseline, I challenged myself to draw good things about her despite the grief, loss, anger, and pain. I reminded myself that nothing is black and white, and that there were still things that I liked about her. Thus I drew her favorite things: bright yellow sunflowers, the Yankees, and books upon books upon books. Drawing this made me feel at peace, evidence that I could appreciate her and her humanity while also having boundaries.
