Dissociating

Digital Painting

One of my frequent automatic coping mechanisms is to dissociate. Like many coping mechanisms, it can be beneficial in some scenarios and detrimental in others.

This painting documents my blank stare I captured in a mirror one day when stressed while visiting family. While I used to berate myself for not being fully present and alert, I now see dissociation as a signal that I need cognitive or physical rest.
