Transparent Quilt

Found Fabric, Embroidery Thread

2021

17 x 14 x 1 inches

Transparent was born out of a desire to process climate change anxieties, reduce waste, explore 3D shapes with textiles, and create a tactile experience in the end product.

The result is a small quilt with transparent pillows filled with tiny waste scraps from past projects.

Each pillow block is smooth to the touch, about 1 inch thick, and acts as a window to the snippets of other projects I have made throughout the year.

The red patches with hearts are made from salvaged cloth napkins from my wedding, while the striped lilac fabric is a familiar shirt my mom used to wear. The black patches are from a hand-bleached knit while the tiny kantha stitches strengthen the fabric and create a pleasant ripple texture.

The woven border repeats the transparency motif, offering glimpses to the construction of the piece and a very delicate sensation to the hands holding it.
