Communion

This digital collage visualizes reclamation of one’s sexuality after receiving damaging messages from religious institutions pushing abstinence and purity.

The moss refers to the woods where I spent a lot of alone time, where I felt safe, as a teen. The communion cups refer to the ritual of drinking "Jesus' blood" and is a metaphor for menstruation, both of which occur on a monthly schedule. The red smoke in the center represents the Holy Ghost, powerful, elusive, and mysterious.
