Fluoxetine

Oil Painting

2021

18 x 24 inches

This piece is a response to a sermon I heard as a teen about how antidepressants "keep us from God." As a teen I was debilitated by anxiety and depression, yet because of this messaging, it took 8 years before I allowed myself to get treatment and take the antidepressants which I desperately needed.

This painting is an homage to the medication that saved my life, Fluoxetine. It is scattered on my kitchen table among treasured mementos like my journal, a hand drawn letter from a friend, a crystal from an ex, a coaster from a night out on the town, and Vitamin D capsules. The plants in the background are some of my favorites in my collection and bring me deep comfort.
